Hello, Texas

Well, the touring part of our trip is over. We’ve driven just over 3,000 miles, seen 5 national parks, camped out four nights, experienced temperatures from 100 degrees down to about 35. Now we’re with Tim’s Uncle Larry & Aunt Jayme in Dallas this morning, then driving 120 miles south to Temple for a few days to make final preparations. Early next week we’ll cross the border (400 miles) and drive to Puebla (700 miles). We’re getting excited (and nervous) about the final phase of our trip. We appreciate your prayers!

Goodbye, Tacoma

Well, the Expedition is loaded, fueled, tuned, re-tired, and re-shocked (worthily of Mexican roads!). And the kids are in bed, and we’re winding things down. Tomorrow we head from Tacoma to Redding, bound for a weekend in the Bay Area, then eastward toward Texas. We’ll be posting our adventures, as wi-fi is available. We value your prayers, especially as we go to the border and across in approximately two weeks. We’ll be staying on top of the security situation at the border and there’s a chance we might go across with some other missionaries.

It’s been a great 16 months here, resting, playing, learning, preparing, and, of course connecting with supporters–churches and individuals. Thank you for your interest and prayers! We are excited to get going and looking forward to being back in Puebla. Stay tuned for more!

Some conquered…some got sawn in two

Topic: Bible thoughts, Opinion. Posted on October 6th, 2010 by Tim — 1 Comment so far

Maybe it’s the packing, maybe it’s the goodbyes, but I’ve been thinking a bit about what we’re undertaking lately, going back to Puebla. This article by Doug Wilson kind of expresses what we hope to do. Maybe it’s ‘cuz I just read Hebrews 11 and am always impressed that it’s balanced enough to point out that, yes, some won great, dramatic victories, but some of the faithful also got sawn in two (Isaiah?). But, by God’s grace, we can move forward, and risk. I’m not much of an entrepreneur, and running a business always frightens me, so Matthew 25:14-30 has always made me uncomfortable. What if I lose it all? But God’s economy isn’t like ours. The motive matters, not just the results.

Not that we’re really worried about getting sawn in two. But it helps to remember risks so that we remember that our lives are always in God’s hands.

Umm, yeah, this is a little bit late in coming, I know, but I haven’t exactly been tearing up the blogosphere with posts lately. So, to offset the rain pouring down outside (will I run or not run in the downpour? I already walked to and from picking Drew up in the rain today…and mowed the lawn in the rain…but I digress…) we offer a hearty electronic congratulations to Nate and Jana on their engagement and Nate’s graduation and the arrival of Nate’s family to Tacoma. Hip, hip, hooray!

We’re excited for them, at how God’s brought them together in his providence (or Providence, but I like the small “p” better) and at the joy they have in each other and in him. God is good (always) and his blessings are amazing. So the two of you are aptly brought together and very good for each other. We’re excited to walk with you and see his hand guiding your future…together!

Even when it’s dumping rain.

A neat opportunity

Topic: Mexico Mininstry. Posted on May 1st, 2010 by Tim — 1 Comment so far

It’s been a fairly full couple of weeks here, with traveling up to north Seattle to be with Bethany Bible Church and then our friends Stephen and Julia visiting (a friendship formed in Puebla with an English couple pastoring in Texas…that’s a different connection, a very good one!).

But tomorrow (almost today) I (Tim) get to start an exciting new ministry for the summer. It combines three of my passions: ministry, the Spanish-speaking world and…baseball. Yes! I’m going to be going to Tacoma’s own Cheney Stadium, home of the the Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle’s Triple A affiliate, to work with the chaplain ministry there to Spanish-speaking players. It’s a neat opportunity that presented itself last fall. One of the seminary students at our home church works for the Rainiers and told me that the chaplains were looking for someone who speaks Spanish to help them with the Latin American players. So, I got in touch and filled out an application with Baseball Chapel, the group that’s approved by baseball to handle ministries and a few weeks ago they approved me. So I’ll be volunteering and helping out this summer. The set up is that we hold chapel on Sundays before home games and then look for opportunities to disciple and serve players beyond that time.

It’s a great chance perhaps to minister to some guys in fairly unusual circumstances (baseball players, away from home and country) and get to do discipleship and encouragement and evangelism. Tomorrow I guess I’ll find out what things are like. Baseball Chapel goes out of their way to be professional and are pretty strict about what a chaplain does (as they should be), so it’s not likely there will be all sorts of stories I’ll be putting out there, but I thought I’d mention this since it is a really cool chance to combine three passions of mine! So please pray for opportunities to minister in a unique environment.

The next Danica…

Topic: Family. Posted on April 17th, 2010 by Tim — 2 Comments

Well, I actually really hope not, judging by what comes up when you google Danica looking for the spelling of the name…

But, today at Mt. Tahoma Baptist Church, our Awana home this year, they held the annual Grand Prix and Drew, Gavin & Fiona all had entries.

Our body shop and mechanical work was done in Moscow, PA at Big Bob’s Big Body Shop. Touch ups and weight adjustments were handled in University Place.

A good time was had by all, and we ended up with the 2010 Champion…Fiona! Her car was undefeated in 6 runs and posted almost all of the fastest times.
It’s funny how luck factors in. This was NOT a great engineering job by Dad, but it sure was fun to see Fiona win (and barely know it!).

Drew and Gavin each won a race or two, so that was fun too.

Thanks to the Awana team at Mt. Tahoma for a great year and a fun event.

Here’s the video of the experience.
