We're going to start this prayer letter out with a Glessner Giggles first. There have been so many changes recently in Drew's life, many of them relevant to our work, that we feel they bear mentioning. Drew started school three weeks ago. That may seem either unremarkable (he is after all, ahem, a prodigy) or incredible (the poor guy's only TWO!). Here in Mexico kids start school early (by 2008 kids will be required to start school by the age of 3). Drew is only going two mornings a week. We see this as an opportunity to help him 1. learn social skills, 2. make friends his age and 3. improve on his rapidly developing Spanish skills. We also hope to meet other families and make new friendships. So far, school has gone well (all three weeks of it), although parent-child partings were a little tough the first week. On other fronts, Drew is developing baseball, basketball, and soccer skills, as well as extensive reading progress in the Berenstain Bears, Arthur, and Winnie-the(r)-Pooh. Plus, the poor guy has served as an excellent sermon illustration of the fact that we ALL, even little Drew, are sinners--much to the astonishment of our listeners! When Jesus says we must become like little children (Mark 10:15) he doesn't mean innocent (do you remember your elementary school days?--innocent is certainly NOT the right description for kids!), but rather accepting the reality of their helpless dependence on their father (Father). So we are thankful for our little learning, growing Object Lesson! We'll also reintroduce the Drew Vocab Quiz at the bottom...
August was a full month of camp-follow up as well as some new contacts. One Sunday an older gentleman walked into church. He'd been referred by another missionary whose father had led him to the Lord. It has been a boost to spend time with Jaime and see his hunger to learn and grow. Tim has also enjoyed meeting with the guys from camp every other Saturday for discipleship. Luis Angel is one of the youth who has been extremely faithful and who is growing in knowledge and commitment to the Lord. Tim's English class with Jose at the University is going well. We are working our way through 2 Peter and having lots of great opportunities to go over the gospel and Bible basics. Barbara-Lee's cooking class is going well, with a number of new ladies and a high level of interest. She started a study of women in the Bible this past Thursday. Attendance at church continues to be low. We seem to be at a point of many contacts and possibilities, but none of those has led to new attendees. We're not about head (or worse, body) counts, but church attendance is one mark of commitment and growth in the life of believers. Here in Puebla people have so many distractions and other priorities (breakfast with Grandma, a birthday party for the niece, etc.) that it is difficult for them to learn to make church on Sunday a priority.
Speaking of church attendance, we're planning for the church's annual "Noche Mexicana", Mexican Night, on Sunday, September 11, to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day (September 15/16). We hope to 1. have lots of fun 2. give people an opportunity to invite friends and family and 3. be able to share the gospel in a non-threatening environment. We'll have contests, songs, games, and of course food. In September we will also be settling on some details for Bible studies for the fall, as the Hudsons return to Puebla.
PRAISE
1. Jaime's attendance and interest.
2. The good response to Barbara-Lee's ladies' group.
3. Good follow up with the youth.
PRAYER
1. Our Noche Mexicana on September 11. Pray that this would open the door to many new contacts and new believers.
2. For friendships and opportunities at Drew's school.
3. Church attendance to rise--based on renewed commitment and growth.
Finally, we're making a public service sports announcement: most of you probably never noticed, but the U.S. soccer team just clinched a berth in the 2006 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Mexico, much to the chagrin of many of our friends here (hopefully we won't lose any friendships over that!). Also, we're enjoying the Mexican League championship of one of Puebla's two baseball teams (which, we regret to say, will be closer than our Seattle Mariners will be to a championship for several years).
We are thankful for your prayers and partnership in our work here.
In Christ,
Tim, Barbara-Lee, and Drew
